Snow

Those of you in Britain will know that we have had a bad week of weather by our standards. On Tuesday night it snowed and the whole of Britain is now covered in snow. NASA took a great photograph of this using the Terra satellite and if you follow the link then you should get to it. The temperature then sank below 0ºC and has stayed there ever since. On Thursday morning it was -8.5ºC on the car when I drove to work. To give you an idea of this my friend Erik told me that it was -9ºC in Berlin when he drove to work.

At the weekend we drove up to Avebury. We have been plenty of times but the chance to see it in the snow was too good to be missed. As you can see there was plenty of snow, although it is not that deep. The temperature had risen but the wind was strong and the it was trying to snow. This mean wearing plenty of warm clothing, boots, etc, etc.

Three of the main stones standing in a line with the snow and mist in shot. What you cannot see are the kids sledging in the ditch that surrounds the site.

By now we were cold and so retreated to the local pub that was open. On the way in I saw these icicles hanging from the thatch of the rook. It made them an interesting colour. Only the rear part of the pub was open but they were doing food and a baked potato and a pint made things a lot better. So the first week of snow has ended. We will see how long it lasts, one long range forcast has it raining by next weekend.
